The Golden Hour

I love shooting in the Golden Hour.  The colors are rich and the light is flattering.  The Golden Hour (or ‘Magic Hour’) is about an hour after sunrise and about an hour before sunset.  During these duration of times, the sun is low in the sky.  This makes for  diffused light that is warm and soft (as opposed to the harsh midday sun that I discussed in my last post).  The Golden hour is amazing for portraits as well as landscape photography.  Below are some photos I have taken during the Golden Hour.  Many times I use a reflector to push some light back into my subjects eyes and body, especially if I have them backlit in the sunset.  Sometimes I will use an off-camera fill flash (strobe)  to illuminate the subject and bring depth to my photos (see below).  This is more of an advanced technique and I will probably write more about this in a future newsletter.  I will talk about using reflectors in my next newsletter.

Here is a recent landscape photo I took in Chicago using my iPhone.

Try shooting during the Golden Hour to capture some beautiful photos.  The sun goes down fast, so have all your gear ready…..Have fun!

David and I are having a photo event for families on Oct. 6, 2012.  Check out the Red Couch Event Here.   Would love to have you over!
