When taking photos, My goal is to control the available light and make it as soft as possible.
Here are some ways to diffuse sunlight:
- Wait: Yep, be patient. Wait for the clouds to roll in so the clouds diffuse the sun. If you can’t wait, then move your subjects…
- Move: Move your subjects into the shade, whether it is under a tree or against a building so they are not in the direct sunlight.
- Make: You can make large diffusers out of white sheers over a frame and hold that up between your subject and the sun. This acts as a ‘cloud’ and makes the light soft. My pop-up 5-in-1 diffuser (which I talked about in the last newsletter tip) also comes with a round sheer…so handy. If you are inside, get your subject by a window for the best light. If direct sun rays are coming in, diffuse with a lightweight curtain/sheer.
Pay attention to the light, because the characteristics of natural light are always changing. Go have fun experimenting!
